We took a 10% sample of all tweets which mentioned a party leader and included the #leadersdebdate hashtag.
The biggest reaction on Twitter was when Nigel Farage claimed 60% of HIV patients on the NHS are foreign nationals.
Looking more generally at the sentiment of the tweets during the debate, there are clear trends. Cameron never really saw any positive sentiment. Miliband hovered around almost getting into positive territory. Farage plumetted when talking about the HIV patients. But Natalie Bennett and Nicola Sturgeon did really very well. Leanne Wood “looked like Nessie” because fewer people were tweeting about her, so her average sentiment was more volatile.
Total mentions? Well, that goes to Nigel Farage. Maybe the surprise result here is that Nicola Sturgeon came in a solid 4th place.
